Best Available Retrofit Technology (BART) and Regional Haze requirements are currently being devised at the state level and must be implemented by 2013 and evaluated by 2018. As environmental issues create more stringent requirements for facilities, industry has become more vocal in its objections to environmental results. The BEIP project undertaken at the Verso Paper mill is an example of an alternative strategy. This project has shown how working together a facility can meet its environmental requirements while maintaining or increasing its profitability. This project is a blue print for using an alternative process to achieve the desired goals of the BART and Regional Haze regulations.
