Many additives, including coatings, used in paper manufacturing serve as nutrient sources for a wide variety of microorganisms. When bacteria and/or fungal populations are uncontrolled in a papermaking system, many problems can occur beyond simple deposit formation. This paper reviews the quality problems encountered in coated/uncoated paper manufacturing operations due to high microbial activity in additives. Many best practices can be implemented to prevent spoilage of additives and the subsequent loss of machine efficiency. The areas in which these best practices should be implemented include fresh water treatment, microbial monitoring, preservation, housekeeping, and operations.
