When you understand what is possible, taking action can make it plausible. Mill water systems are the lifeblood of the papermaking process and yet they are often low on the list of where attention is focused for improvement potential. Most papermakers can identify where a clearer source of process water would benefit their operation and yet they are at a loss as to how that water could be obtained. Fresh water is the fallback option and this sustains the significant and unnecessary loss of fiber, energy and water from mill systems. Process water with the right clarity is available through microfiltration. In-mill studies demonstrate these results but also identify the economic returns available. Examples from past studies that used rotary drum microfilter technology in various pulp and paper mill locations demonstrate the solids removal achievable and the potential savings through energy reduction, fiber recovery, reduced fresh water intake and lower effluent outflow.
