SetPoint: Donuts and Diversity, Paper360º March/April 2021
When I attended my very first pulp and paper industry conference, I was younger than my own son is now. It was 1989, and back then PIMA Conferences were both serious learning opportunities…and family affairs.
In addition to a full schedule of conference sessions, meetings, and seminars, there was a “Wives Program” (there were very few attendee “husbands” because there were very few women in the industry) and a “Kids Program” to keep the little ones busy. Many of the families had formed close friendships with each other over the years of their dads’ pulp and paper industry careers. What was rarely mentioned: these confer-ences sometimes represented the only family “vacation” all year. Dad could justify three days away from the mill to become a better manager or learn about the latest process improvements—but otherwise, his 60-hour work weeks didn’t afford much time off.
