Combination of a Dry Solid Oxidizing Bromine Biocide and a Unique Feeder is a Practical New Treatment Alternative for Paper Mills, 1997 Biological Sciences Symposium Proceedings
Oxidizing biocides have been used for years in pulp and paper manufacture to control growth of microorganisms and slime buildup. The term oxidizer brings to mind the use of liquid chlorine and/or bromine metered from different bins or drums. This often results in more regulatory paperwork and inventory control activities, due to the safety issues associated with using a liquid oxidizing biocide. This paper presents a second generation of oxidizing biocide technology, which is safer to use than other oxidizers because it is supplied as a dry, granular solid. This product, a mixture of chlorinated isocyanurate and sodium bromide, is effective because the formulation delivers the same halogen punch (HOBr and HOCl) as other oxidizers. It is also easy to apply in most papermaking processes with a new, patented delivery system. Field trials have demonstrated that the combination of the dry solid product and the unique feeder is a practical alternative biocide system for paper mills.
