Building Better Information Highways -- Networking the Factory Floor in a Box Plant, 1993 Corrugated Containers Conference Proceedings
Mark J. Gartrell--Improvements in manufacturing equipment have advanced the production process to a point where further gains will not be readily achieved without corresponding improvements to plant information systems. Existing systems are unable to reliably distribute large amounts of data to multiple users over a wide area in real time.
Any system solution must provide for the high speed collection and distribution of information throughout the plant in real time while maintaining information integrity, integrating third parties, and providing better user access.
This paper will describe an open, standards-based system that utilizes the latest in computer, network, database and graphical user interface technology to provide affordable, true distributed information processing. Implementation of such a system guarantees continuity of information flow through sales, scheduling, manufacturing, shipping, and customer service.
