Brazil initiated its production of coated paper in 1939 01 , in the state of São Paulo at Klabin Paper Mill. The past sixty years of history can be divided in three distinct phases. The first phase is the history and folklore, the second, which addresses the Brazilian colloidal clay and, finally, the current phase with the opening of Brazilian ports.

The objective of this work is to make a historical review of the Brazilian development in the manufacturing process of woodfree and wood contained coated papers during the past sixty years. Production data related to this historical period of the Brazilian pulp and paper industry is presented.
