This report compares the supercalendering effects on paper finished with meta-aramid paper filled rolls, cotton filled rolls and fiber-reinforced epoxy (polymer covered) rolls. Specifically, effects on paper characteristics-gloss, smoothness, bulk and permeability-were studied. The tests were run on a pilot supercalender at the Centre Technique du Papier (CTP) at the University of Grenoble, France. The results, which were obtained with SC gravure and LWC offset paper grades, show that meta-aramid filled rolls can replace cotton filled rolls without a loss of properties. The superior marking resistance of the meta-aramid filled rolls assures long life and low regrind rates, which translates to economical benefits.
