My TAPPI Story: Leslie Petrie
This research presented preliminary study on the influence of the fiber consistency of a fiber suspension jet, fiber length, and flow parameters on the angle of spread of fiber suspension jets under dilution in a shear flow. A fiber suspension jet is introduced parallel to the dilution water flow in a retangular test section made of transparent Plexiglas. Synthetic fibers were used to ease control of the properties of fibers such as fiber geometry and surface properties. Digital imaging technique was employed to measure the angle of spread of fiber suspension jet. It was found that the angle of spread is significantly affected by the velocity ratio between the primary fiber flow and the secondary water flow and inversely proportional to the consistency of fiber suspensionjet and fiber length.
