Commercialization of Repulpable Hot Melt Adhesives, 1993 Hot Melt Symposium Proceedings
James Joseph Owens
Commercialization of recyclable hot melt adhesives requires that we determine which hot melt technology will best meet the needs of recyclers and that we know what benefits the hot melt users will realize by switching to a recyclable hot melt.
This paper will review various hot melt technologies available; filterable, density separation, water dispersable and alkali dispersable and conclude that the water dispersable technology is the system which will best meet the needs of recyclers.
This paper will then discuss the specific benefits to be realized by the following markets in switching to a water dispersable hot melt: Roll Wrapping, Bookbinding, Tissue/Towel Manufacture, Case/Carton Sealing and Multiwall Bag Manufacture. In some cases recyclable hot melts will allow the hot melt market to expand and replace liquid adhesives.
