My TAPPI Story: Eupidio Scopel
Ozone is one of the latest bleaching agents used industrially. It has a great potential for replacing chlorine-based chemicals in bleaching. Ozone combined with oxygen and peroxide makes it possible to develop bleaching sequences that are totally free of chlorine-containing chemicals. However, ozone caused a serious reduction in pulp viscosity. lmprovement of process selectivity -ratio of viscosity to kappa number- is a must for successful application of ozone in TCF bleaching to full brightness. Proposed ways of enhancing selectivity in ozone stage include the use of pretreatments, additives and post-treatments. The best pretreatment, additive and post-treatment have been EDTA, oxalic acid and sodium borohydride, respectively. Brightness and viscosities around 90 % ISO and 800 cm 3 /g respectively, can be reached with the studied sequence.
