Closure of the EO Stage in the ECF Bleach Plant, 1997 Minimum Effluent Mills Symposium Proceedings

In June 1996 the Korsnäs Mill was granted permission to increase the pulp production to 700,000 ADt/year. The permit also requires the company to investigate the cost and technical potential for achieving a level of 30 tonnes COD/day or 15 kg COD/ADt. The EO-stage in the bleach plant has been closed into the unbleached side of the fibre line since 1995. The results of this alkaline closure are lower emmisions of COD from the bleach plant. Alkaline closure with an ECF concept gives an accumulation of chloride in the chemical re-covery system. Our experience shows that even a small increase in the chloride content of the EO filtrate can cause problems in the re-covery boiler. The problems with a further COD closure has been investigated. The cost efficiency for dif- ferent investment alternatives for reducing COD has been estimated...
