It is a difficult task for a paper machine operator to manually maintain a uniform shade of color in a paper-making process. Very commonly, a paper machine producing different shades makes significant colored broke during a manual shade change. An automatic control system is necessary to maintain a more consistent color production and to reduce broke during the shade changes. This paper describes a color control system designed to meet these objectives. The color control system utilizes an on-line color measurement to control colorant additions to a paper making process. The article describes an on-line color measurement, a multivariable color-control approach, and a system implemented to manage shade control for paper machines. The coloring improvements made by this system are also included in the discussions.
