Governors, legislators, and public policy-makers continually hear from industry that the most efficient and effective means of reducing the amount of packaging going to the waste stream is through voluntary means. A window of opportunity currently exists for companies to join in a national effort to demonstrate the effectiveness of voluntary measures to reduce packaging waste. The Coalition of Northeastern Governors (CONEG) Challenge is that mechanism. This presentation will provide an overview of the CONEG Challenge, as well as the alternatives to voluntary action. In addition, the current status of the CONEG Toxics in Packaging Model Legislation and the future directions of the CONEG Source Reduction Task Force will be discussed.
