My TAPPI Story: Eupidio Scopel
Dean S. Thorp Sr. & Robert H. Tieckelmann, Ph.D. FMC Corporation David J. Millar and Guy E. West Hercules Inc. Activated alkali metal persulfates effectively repulp neutral/alkaline wet-strength broke and decolorize certain dyes and optical brighteners more effectively than non-activated persulfates. Activated persulfates offer an alternative to hypochlorites, without the environmental concerns associated with chlorine-containing compounds. Laboratory studies emphasize the importance of concentration, temperature, and pH for optimal repulping and decolorization. Other significant factors affecting efficacy include paper additives, lignin content, dye chemistry, and mechanical agitation.
