My TAPPI Story: Leslie Petrie
The effects of size press starch addition level and before size press drying on HST sizing and black and color ink jet print quality were studied. Size press starch addition level and before size press drying had surprisingly large effects on HST sizing at the reel. Black ink jet line growth and optical density improved as HST sizing increased. At the same level of HST sizing, increased levels of size press starch improved black ink front optical density. The effects of size press starch addition level and HST sizing on color ink jet print quality were significantly different. Color-to-color bleed and front optical density improved as size press starch addition level increased. HST sizing had little or no effect on color-to-color bleed or front optical density. Papermaking conditions that balance the conflicting needs of black and color ink jet printing are presented.
