Attempt to Analyse Rice Straw Based Mechano-Chemical Pulp for Processing, 1991 Pulping Conference Proceedings

An attempt has been made in this paper to generate data for mechano-chemical pulping of Rice straw. 48 experiments were performed in the laboratory to find out the conditions for rice straw pulping by mechano-chemical or chemi-mechanical process. The normal conditions used by the industry are taken in to consideration in the present investigation with also the combination chosen by the industry. The variations of temperature, consistency, time of cooking, alkali dose at constant speed of the agitator propellor are investigated. The properties are investigated with the aim to confine to only screen yield, kappa number, pentosan content and lignin content. As varieties of paper products can be obtained from the same raw material and the multi objective customer demands are based on its end uses the choice of either higher screen yield, higher total yield, lower rejects, lower lignin content and higher pentosan content has to be made. The optimum input parameters probably lie with the following values: Consistency: 4.5%-5%; Time of cooking: 1 hour; Temperature: 35OK-353K and Alkali dose based on 0-D. fibre: 5% Attempt has also been made to develop some mathematical relations interconnecting lignin and pentosan content, screen yield and kappa number with the data, obtained from the laboratory experiments. The deviation indicates that the correlations fairly agree with the data evaluated within the range of experimentation.
