Laccase: The Renegade of Fiber Modification, 2001 Pulping Conference Proceedings

R. P. Chandra, A. J. Ragauskas--Laccase was applied to high-kappa kraft pulps in combination with tyrosine, guaiacol sulfonate and 4-hydroxy- phenyl-acetic acid to graft these compounds to the pulp to change paper properties. Pulp samples showed 3-4 pts increase in kappa number after treatment with laccase and 4-hydroxy-phenylacetic acid (Paa), accompanied by increases in bulk carboxylic acid groups, water retention value, tensile tear and burst strength. Upon analysis of material isolated from the fiber surface, it was concluded that the fiber properties most likely changed via laccase- faciliated attachment of Paa to the fiber surface, resulting in increases in the hydrogen bonding capabilities of the fiber.
