Cariboo Recovery Furnace Expansion - Operational Experience, 1992 Engineering Conference Proceedings
The approach by Gotaverken Energy Systems for upgrading recovery boilers includes increasing capacity by enlarging the lower furnace volume and upgrading combustion air and liquor tiring systems. This, in combination with installation of additional steam superheating surfaces and modern long flow economizers, provides for a more efficient and safer operation of older recovery units.
The furnace expansion at Cariboo Pulp and Paper Company, Quesnel, British Columbia consisted of replacement of the lower furnace by a composite tube furnace at the same time the plan area was increased. This increased the capacity of the unit significantly. Other modifications included a new air system, upgrade of the black liquor system, and an additional secondary superheater. The unit has now been in operation since July of 1989 and has been subjected to two annual inspections.
The paper summarizes the results from operation and the first inspection.
