Case Study of Polyethylene Pipe in a Paper Mill Application, 1996 Engineering Conference Proceedings

A 1200 mm diameter polyethylene pipeline which had been in service at a paper mill for over 8 years developed leaks in two segments . These were removed from the line and evaluated to determine the cause(s) of failure . The primary cause was found to be the presence of debris in the pipe wall which acted as stress concentrators and loci for fracture initiation under the cyclic pressure and elevated temperature operating conditions.
