Behavior-Based Safety: One Company's Approach, 1998 Engineering Conference Proceedings

This presentation describes one company’s approach to exploring the field of behavior-based safety. Like many companies, we at Champion had questioned what to make of the current hot subject of behavior-based safety. We had an interest in using the behavioral approach for improving safety performance, yet had a concern about the inefficiency of individual locations doing their own exploration of this field. This presentation focuses on the steps that Champion took to study the subject of behavior-based safety and ultimately develop its own approach. Key features of this approach and major concerns raised during the company’s initial stages of the implementation effort are discussed.
