Assessment of the Capabilities and Limitations of the Basins Model, 2000 Environmental Conference Proceedings

- J. A. Beebe, R. C. Whittemore, D. A. Barton -- This paper summarizes recent NCASI activities that assess BASINS' capabilities and limitations for adequately modeling watersheds for the purposes of developing a TMDL. These activities have demonstrated the complexity associated with the use of the modeling system and have identified some important limitations of the current version of BASINS. The analyses described in this paper focus on the nonpoint source model HSPF and the related input structures and calibration data. Specific issues addressed herein include; the need to import additional watershed descriptive data into BASINS for model execution, calibration of watershed hydrology, and limitations on available water quality data for model calibration.
