Assessment, Management and Abatement of Asbestos/Panel Discussion, 1990 Environmental Conference Proceedings

The thrust of the panel discussion will focus on the changing state-of-the-art for asbestos management and abatement from the mill, corporate, industrial hygiene, and engineering aspects. The discussion will use the expertise of and lessons learned by the panel members. Audience participation will be solicited to exchange pertinent information from all personnel.

Mr. Elam will focus his discussion on the industrial hygiene aspects of management in place and remediation. He will discuss the most recent trends in state and federal regulations and guidelines and he will summarize current thinking on health effects and potential risks.

Mr. Dumas will address the engineering aspects of asbestos abatement projects. He will review new abatement techniques and compare state regulatory procedures.

Mr. Talbot will discuss the considerations in surveying and abating asbestos in different operating facilities in several states. The corporate philosophy was consistent but the approach varied slightly with each operation.

Mr. Rousseau and Mr. Radia will provide an insight into one mill’s approach to addressing asbestos on a mill-wide basis. They will provide a perspective on surveying, locating and managing the material until abatement is complete.
