Alternative Landfill Odor Cover, 1992 Environmental Conference Proceedings
As in the case of industry in general, the paper industry, has seen an increase in the number of issues and regulations concerning environmental health and safety aspects associated with its industry. Such matters affecting the paper industry span a number of different areas and divisions of the regulatory agencies - e.g., waste water, solid waste, air emissions, and OSHA. One such issue which surfaces periodically for a variety of reasons is the covering of landfills containing the sludges from pulp and paper mills which are often difficult to manage. Many of the problems revolve around the high moisture content and the release of odorous compounds. A material has been developed that has other uses, but also can provide excellent odor control and can can be easily and effectively applied over sludge with a high moisture content. As an added bonus to the paper industry and our waste stream, this alternative cover material incorporates recycled newspaper as a key component.
