Field Screening Procedure for the Rapid Analyses of PCP Contaminated Soils, 1993 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Fraser, Inc. desired to remediate soil containing pentachlorophenol (PCP) from an area adjacent to the location of a former tank used for the application of wood preservatives. To determine the amount of soil that would have to be excavated, an investigation of the area to determine the extent of PCP migration was conducted. The investigative work included the placing of seven borings in and around the location of the former tank. Because of the potential presence of residual fuel oil in the soil which would interfere with the sample analyses, samples obtained were screened for PCP using Gas Chromatography (GC) with an Electrolytic Conductivity Detector (ELCD). The validity of the screening samples was checked by laboratory analysis of a random number of the samples.
