A short overview of technical options for NCG (HCLV gas) control is presented, with emphasis on VCP’s historical practices. Various objectives were defined at a corporate level when it was perceived that significant improvements were necessary in the TRS control systems of the two principal pulp mills. The principal objectives included efficient TRS oxidation SO2 control lower downtime and maintenance (including costs safety from explosions and no increase in corrosion. Justification for the final choice, i.e. using the recovery boiler, was based on a design that injects heated NCG with air at the tertiary air level of the boiler. The projects at each mill are described succinctly, with emphasis on how the objectives were met. Flow diagrams, control philosophy, initial results and start up problems are summarized. Conclusions and some recommendations are presented.
