Benchmarking the Effluent Treatment in our Five Pulp Mills, 2003 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Metsä-Botnia operates five sulphate pulp mills in Finland. The capacities of the mills range from 400,000 to 600,000 metric tonnes of bleached sulphate pulp per year. All the mills lead process effluents to biological effluent treatment plants. The plants are either mill specific or receive effluent from the neighbouring mills and/or communities.

The effluent treatment plants were comprehensively benchmarked during 2002. This paper discusses the results of the study. The operations of the different effluent treatment plants is reviewed. The effect of the benchmarking is evaluated and future targets presented.
