Barrier Screws - Feeding Considerations, 1993 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

Wayne F. Allen

Feeding the extruder is sometimes simple, sometimes aggravating. Extrusion coating presents some special feeding problems, especially with resins with low melting points, as they melt too soon. This work evaluated feed channel depth in trying to better cope with an ionomer which has a low melting range.

The melting model offers a better explanation than the old idea that "deeper is cooler".

Barrier screw designs offer improvements in the extrusion coating process. Such barrier designs coupled with better feeding, offer benefits to the converter which include stability, dependability, and versatility.
