My TAPPI Story: Leslie Petrie
Five-layer cast coextruded films were evaluated for peel strength as a function of total film thickness, relative amounts of the constituent layers, and type of cap layer. The films were all symmetric about the center and had the configuration ABCBA. The cap layers (A) consisted of various polyethylene grades; the tie layer (B) was a chemically modified polyethylene; the center layer (C) was an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) resin. Conventional T-peel testing was performed at 254 mm/min (10 in/min). The results indicate that the total film thickness had the greatest effect on peel strength, followed by the type and level of polyethylene cap. Reducing the total amount of tie layer from 8% to 4% also resulted in a reduction in peel strength.
