My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
Poly(lactic acid) is modified using peroxide reactions to increase the molecular weight distribution and degree of branching. This results in substantial increases in melt elasticity which allows an otherwise
linear low melt strength polymer to run well on commercial extrusion coating lines. Results show that peroxide level is the most important variable in increasing swell ratio and Mz/Mn. When extruded at high throughputs, PLA with swell ratios greater than about 1.4 with Mz/Mn of at least about 7 show little neck-in and no edge weave than non-modified PLA and can reach much higher line speeds and, therefore, lower coat weights .
