Comparison of Grooved Feed vs. Smooth Bore on Extrusion LLDPE Film Properties and Film Quality, 1997 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

Smooth Bore extruders are still the norm in the US while grooved feed extruders have found wide application in Europe for the production of LLDPE film. There has been a recent push of grooved feed extruders for LLDPE in the US by extrusion manufacturers. Grooved feed extruders can be more versatile in the different types of resins that can be processed, and they have the advantage of stable melt temperature control over a wide output range. However, the question remains: What difference is there in melt quality and film properties between grooved feed and smooth bore extruders for LLDPE film? This paper is a first step in addressing this question.
