Folding cartons are made from paperboard and used to protect a wide variety of consumer products, while also providing safe transport and another means to market goods to consumers. The primary paperboard substrates used to manufacture folding cartons include Solid Bleached Sulfate (SBS), Coated Unbleached Kraft (CUK), Coated Recycled Board (CRB), Microflute; Coated Laminated Kraft (CLK); and Uncoated Kraft Boxboard (UKB). Major end-use markets for folding cartons include: cosmetics and personal care; frozen food; chilled and other foods; pharmaceutical/healthcare; cigarettes and non-food products. Each major end-use market has unique micro-demographic trends that impact folding carton sales. 
In 2006, the global folding carton market was valued at more than $47.2 billion. By 2012, the total global market for folding cartons hit $63.4 billion. With sales of more than $21.26 billion in 2012, Asia accounted for nearly one-half of total sales. Within Asia, China led the way, followed by Japan and other Asian countries. With sales in excess of $17 billion, the North American market came in second place with the United States accounting for nearly all of the volume. The European market reported sales of $15 billion making it the third-largest market for folding cartons.
