Over the past few years, suppliers of metered size presses have commissioned approximately 300 new plants. In their majority, the machines are used as coaters, but a significant number has also been ordered to replace size presses. This means that the metered size press is ousting the flooded nip size press almost completely. The reasons behind this change are both economic aspects and the desired quality enhancement of paper products. Economics include cost savings to be achieved by increased solids and improved paper machine runnability-as it demonstrated by figures from industrial applications. With its characteristic features, the metered size press lends itself to a variety of applications where it is conveniently substituted for a flooded nip size press. The lively interest the industry takes in metered size presses is also reflected in the frequent trials conducted at VESTRA.
