My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
The application range of film coating is limited by several factors. Film splitting related effects like misting play a predominant role. The influence of the color dewatering has been extensively studied. In this paper, the influence of the roll cover was investigated with a production coating color designed for a very high coat weights at mid-speed. The wet film thickness, the transfer rate to the paper and the misting behavior were measured. Trials were carried out with covers having different elastic modulus, roughness and wettability. It was found that all three parameters play a major role. The results allow optimzing a cover for high coat weights. Experience from a running machine confirmed the reliability of the assumputions.
