Operating Experiences at Goricane Paper Mill, Medvode, Slovenia, 2000 Metered Size Press Forum

Goricane Paper Mill is well known as a manufacturer of specialty papers. The existing paper machine has been equipped with a film press to further extend the wide range of grades produced. To meet these high demands, the optimum unit with associated periphery was selected by pilot trials and a carfully prepared specification.

The high demand was best met by the revolutionary film coating unit-the SpeedFlow-which has been completely newly developed by Voith Sulzer. The coating fluid is applied without contact with the roll as a free jet using Multi-Jet nozzles. Thermal decoupling of the supporting body and free-jet applicator and the use of hte lates composite materials ensure optimum operating conditions. The coating color preparation system, too, had to meet a number of special conditions. A basic prerequisite, for example, is the separate determination of the coat application on the top side and bottom sides.

On the basis of the experience gained so far and the operating results, an insight has been gained into the production of uncatoed papers, specialty paers coated on one side (silicone base papers, CF coat) and graphic papers coated on two sides. It becomes clear that the coating color composition had to be adapted to the new application system step by step.

The results achieved in terms of economic efficiency and runnability after the successful rebuild speak for themselves. The optimization ptoential that still exists is explained. Thanks to the new film press technology, there are no longer any obstacles to the development of new paper grades.
