Tactile Evaluation of Softness of Tissue - Panel Methods, Technical Information Paper TIP 0808-08 (2024)

This technical information paper outlines the key approaches for evaluating the softness, or handfeel, of tissue paper through sensory evaluation panels, hereafter referred to as handfeel panels. It describes both quantitative and descriptive panel methods utilizing human tactile assessment. Single expert evaluations are excluded in favour of more accurate panel methods. The paper provides guidelines to help readers select the most suitable panel method based on their samples, panelists, and desired outcomes. Best practices for handfeel panels are detailed, including panel preparation, panelist selection and training, and sample selection, handling, and storage. This document is not intended to serve as a comprehensive guide for individual panel execution; readers should refer to the bibliography for specific procedures and calculations.

This TIP applies to the tactile evaluation of the softness of tissue and towel paper products, including bath tissue, facial tissue, napkins, kitchen towels, and hand towels. It excludes the evaluation of all other materials.
