QCS Dynamic Sensor Correlation Sampling Method, Technical Information Paper TIP 1101-04 (2026)
This method describes dynamic sampling procedures to compare a defined region measured by an online Quality Control System (QCS) on the paper machine with the paper tested in the lab. Commonly known as “single point”, “short scan” or “mini scan”, the method defines the collection of paper samples from a fixed cross‑direction (CD) location aligned with a narrow CD span measured by the QCS sensor.
The method applies to any QCS‑measured property for which a laboratory reference exists. Property‑specific dynamic correlation guidance is addressed in other published TAPPI Technical Information Papers, including TIP 1101‑05 (Moisture Dynamic Correlation Method), TIP 1101‑08 (Basis Weight Dynamic Correlation Method), and TIP 1101‑10 (Caliper Dynamic Correlation – Single Point Method). This TIP focuses on the common sampling and spatial alignment principles that support these property‑specific methods.
This method is intended for use during new QCS installations, correlation troubleshooting, periodic verification and routine maintenance, and following process, grade, or laboratory method changes that may affect alignment between online QCS measurements and offline test results.
