Ring Crush vs. STFI for testing compression
James W. Replogle
The Ring Crush test is not the choice for the broad range of basis weights normally produced.
Editor’s Note: This article is in support of “The comparative response of Ring Crush Test and STFI Short Span Crush Test to paper mill process variable changes” by Joseph J. Batelka, which was published in the October 2000 issue of Corrugating International.
A common observation by mill papermakers is, “On occasion, we get Ring Crush, but not STFI.” A comparison of Ring Crush and STFI may explain this common thought. STFI and Ring Crush are two completely different tests, though both are intended to be used to predict the strength of a finished corrugated box.
