Additional compression force due to banding of unitized loads: A consideration for calculation of case strength using ISTA compression equations, Corrugating International, April 2002 (184KB)
ISTA Compression
Kurt F. Trombley and Eric V. Prewett
It was hypothesized that significant Compression forces were created by unitization banding of loads to pallets for distribution. These forces were in addition to the theoretical compression force values established for a single case according to the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) equation and were not accounted for when performing a simulated compression test of corrugated containers. This article documents the additional forces applied to cases due to banding forces. Based on these findings, a modification to the current ISTA equation is suggested for applications where banding will be used.
