ABSTRACT: We have studied the influence of pH and sodium concentration in liquor on sodium adsorption by Eucalyptus globulus kraft pulp has been studied. The adsorption is negligible at pH<3 and increases withincreasing pH to reach a limit value of the amount of sodium adsorbed at pH 7-8. Under such conditions, the carboxyl groups present in the lignin and the polysaccharide fractions of the pulp dissociated completely. We adjusted the equilibrium data satisfactorily to the Langmuir model, and obtained the values Q=8.26 kg sodium sulfate (Na2SO4)/o.d. ton pulp and k=62.8 L/g Na2SO4 for the isothermal parameters.
These parameters, incorporated into the WinGEMS simulator, will allow us to obtain the sodium balance and to simulate the totally chlorine free (TCF) kraft pulp process.
Application: The aim is to obtain the adsorption parameters of the Langmuir isotherm for sodium adsorption on eucalyptus kraft pulp to establish the global sodium balance and simulate the process.
