CANADA IS THE WORLD’S LARGEST exporter of pulp and paper, comprising one-third of world exports. During the last few years’ economy, the demand for all types of paper increased; this in turn increased wood chip prices. At its peak, wood cost, in some Canadian pulp mills, was as much as 50% of the pulp production cost. The increased wood cost, coupled with an increasing concern for future fiber supplies, has strengthened the pulp and paper industry’s interest in alternative fiber sources, i.e., annual plants.
