PREVIOUS WORK HAS SHOWN THAT kraft pulp yields from hard-woods are positively correlated with the cellulose contents of the wood and more weakly correlated with hemicellulose contents (1). For plantation eucalypt woods, kraft pulp yields are often strongly correlated with cellulose content (2–5) and weakly and negatively with hemicellulose contents (5). The existence of a strong correlation between cellulose content and kraft pulp yield offers the possibility of screening large numbers of wood specimens for their pulp-yielding potential without having to resort to the laborious and expensive process of laboratory-scale pulping.
