Industrial pulp yield, especially cooking yield, is often mentioned but very seldom exactly known. Wood consumption figures, often in volume, for a given sold pulp production establish the economy but do not tell how much from the solid wood input mass was yielded as pulp fibres. Several factors before the cooking system affect yield. Standard instrumentation and measurements are not able to give reliable and relevant pulp yield information. The present paper discusses the difficulties attached to the issue of yield and its determination. A direct method, basket hanging inside batch digesters, is described based on experiences from hundreds of basket cooking tests at various pulp mills over the world. In addition, indirect possibilities such as mill measurements and pulp analytics are discussed.
