The pulp mill at Tugela, part of the South African SAPPI group, was faced with the task of supplying different qualities of unbleached pulp to its paper machines. In addition, the capacity of its recovery plant would not be able to support the increase in pulp production needed for the planned expansion of its linerboard machine. In order to address both these constraints, it was decided to produce high kappa pulp in the digester which would improve the yield, easing the recovery constraint and satisfying the quality needed for the linerboard machine.
