A SUCCESSFUL TREE BREEDING program relies heavily on the assessment of the trait of interest in large numbers of trees. When that trait is kraft pulp yield, the expensive wet chemistry methods involved make large scale assessment unrealistic. Traditional assessment has involved felling selected trees and pulping a bulked sample of chips taken from a number of sampling zones along the tree’s stem.
