The standard practice in a conventional kraft hardwood is to maintain a kappa number of 16-18. Extending conventional kraft pulping of hardwood from kappa numbers 16-18 to low kappa numbers 12-13 results in a high yield loss. Extending delignification to a low kappa number is possible with anthraquninone (AQ) and polysulfide (PS) process without affecting the quality of pulp.
