The computer model was developed to simulate the Lo-Solids Kamyr continuous digester. The model was a static model that simulated steady state processes for process optimization and retrofit feasibility studies. A new equation that described cellulose degradation by dissolved lignin was incorporated in the model, which made it possible to evaluate the effects of multiple black liquor extractions. One of the kraft digesters of Nippon Paper Industries was converted from the conventional cooking to Lo-Solids cooking. Comparing process data before and after the retrofit validated the computer model. Simulation shows that higher pulp viscosity and yield were obtained at a given kappa number by Lo-Solids cooking.
