THE ADDITION OF CATALYTIC amounts of anthraquinoneto alkaline pulping processes offers several advantages. Pulping rates increase, pulp yields are higher, and the chemical recovery system is improved interms of capacity (1). In recent years, the use of anthraquinone has increased, due in part to a substantial reduction in price (2). We have been investigating ways to prepare pulping catalysts at even lower costs and thus to encourage more wide spread use of catalysts (3,4).
