Effect of Pigment Properties on Coating Structure as Measured by AFM, 2005 TAPPI Coating Conference

PressWeb.jpg

Cross sections of a range of laboratory coated samples including clay and precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) pigments with various particle size and particle size distribution (p.s.d.) were mapped with atomic force microscopy in the contact mode. The samples had the same styrene butadiene latex binder content. Subsequently, through image analysis techniques the pore structure was characterized from the cross-sectional topography images. In agreement with previous research, it was found that the coating porosity and the coating pore size are correlated to the mean pigment size and to the width of the particle size distribution for kaolin clay. It was observed that PCC presented a more numerous population of pores and smaller pore size when compared to kaolin clay with the same particle size.
