Influence of Binder Variables on Coating Consolidation Rates Measured Under Dynamic Conditions, 2005 TAPPI Coating Conference
Coating immobilization and dewatering has been studied with a relatively new technique, which measures
the apparent viscosity increase with time directly on the basesheet of interest. Coating binder variables and
their contribution to coating immobilization rates were examined by experimental design techniques.
Polymer glass transition temperature was found to have a significant effect on immobilization kinetics and
this was related to the structure and permeability of the filtercake layer at the basesheet-coating interface.
This effect was observed in the presence of different pigment types and various thickener chemistries and
has the potential to improve coating formulation design and hence coater runnability.
